Minoshima Mino (簔島信勝展) Exhibit at Ginza Ono Gallery-2 (小野画廊-2)

This exhibit by Minoshima Mino (簔島信勝展) was held at Ginza Ono Gallery-2 (小野画廊-2).  (The promotional postcard has an example from the exhibit.)  I went by the gallery a few times, but the artist was never there, so I wasn't able to talk to them about their art.

Ohya Chihiro (大矢千尋) Exhibit at Gallery Platform Studio (ギャラリープラットフォームスタジオ) - (2010/05)

This exhibit (2010/05/23-29) was by Ohya Chihiro (大矢千尋) at Gallery Platform Studio (ギャラリープラットフォームスタジオ).  In addition to the promotional postcard, scroll down for a look at a picture I took of part of the exhibit.

It was a nice exhibit - the only thing that was unfortunate is that a room down the hall was being painted, and the smell of the paint was thick in the air.  Otherwise, everything was nice.  (Behind the round picture at the back, is a round window, BTW.)

M - Jazz Band Live in Shinjuku - May 18th, 2010

I think I've seen these guys play before, but I'll have to go back through old videos and take a look.  Unfortunately, I didn't get the name of them the night I took this video.

(Watching this video after the fact, it looks like there might be some kind of flyers in the guitar case... I wish I'd picked one up...)

Harada Bushin (原田武眞) Exhibit at Gallery-403 (ギャラリー403)

This exhibit (2010/05/13-22) of paintings by Harada Bushin (原田武眞) at Gallery-403 (ギャラリー403) was enjoyable to contemplate, and the artist pointed out something about the picture on the promotional postcard that I hadn't thought of before - the perception of colors depending on the season.  He said he thought the white background was fitting for spring - how it would feel lonely in autumn and cold in winter.

This exhibit (2010/05/13-18) by Tonuma Makiko (戸沼牧子) at K's Gallery consisted of images similar to the one on the promotional postcard.  There was one by the door with a predominantly blue theme that I liked best.  I spoke with the artist and a friend of hers for a little while about both her art and art in general.

This exhibit (2010/05/06-15) was of two artists - Nobu Hosana and PoeEtYayo (ノブホサナ ポオエヤヨ), at Gallery Ginza 1- Chome (ギャラリー銀座一丁目).  There were several magnifying lenses laid out to aid in looking at the fine details of the images (which I spent some time doing).

Supigura Photo (スピグラの会写真展) Group Exhibit at Gallery Izu (ギャラリーいず) - (2010/05)

This group photo exhibit (2010/05/15-23) at Gallery Izu (ギャラリーいず) is by a group calling themselves "Supigura Photo" (スピグラの会写真), with "supigura" an abbreviation for "Speed Graphic",  the camera.  All of the group are retired Yomiuri Newspaper press photographers who now take pictures as a hobby.
スピグラの会写真展 / ギャラリーいず

I talked with a couple of the group members for a bit and was intrigued by the picture that emerged of rushing out to cover a story with a reporter, and then giving the film to a messenger on a motorcycle who would rush it back to the newspaper with article notes supplied by the reporter.

The pre-wireless, and pre-cell phone life seems more exciting in a way.  I had a small taste of that today, as I went out and discovered my cell phone battery was completely discharged, so I was cut off from communications for the day.  With a cell phone in hand, on one hand, it's reassuring to know that you can be reached if there is an emergency, but always being essentially on-line is also - in a way - a loss of privacy and adventure.

Well, anyway - it's a great collection of pictures taken by professional photographers, so if you're near Ginza, you might want to check it out.

Niramusi (新山にらむし) Installation at Gallery Kobo-2 (巷房2)

This installation by Niramusi (新山にらむし展) is at Gallery Kobo-2 (巷房2) in the Okuno Building.  The colors are nihonga I was told, and it's interesting to stand at the threshold of the space and look into the room, which has a feeling of great depth with all the colors hanging from the ceiling.

Maeda Chieko (前田千絵子展) Exhibition at Gallery Kobo-2 (巷房2)

This exhibit (2010/05/10-15) by Maeda Chieko (前田千絵子展) at Gallery Kobo-2 (巷房2) I found most interesting when looked at in detail, which is exactly the view on the promotional postcard.  Stepping back and looking at the shape of the objects, I wasn't getting the concept, but the close-up details I liked.
Actually, my favorite art from this artist I discovered in a photo album showing past work and installations.  This was my favorite installation (three pages, each with a photo of the installation):

Starting with the first link, you can just click on the picture and it takes you to the next one and the next.  The second photo is the one I like the best.  I think that may be the coolest installation I've seen.

This exhibit (2010/05/10-15) by Kawauchi Akira (河内章展) at Gallery Kobo (巷房) consisted of pictures similar to the one featured on the promotional postcard.  I held up the promotional card next to the original and noted that the color had - as is typically the case when printing a painting - shifted a little.  So if you'd like to see the original, rush over to Gallery Kobo, as today is the last day of the exhibition!

"サスライメイカー (Sasuraimeika), Live in Rainy Shinjuku" - May 11th, 2010

Especially considering they had electric amplifiers, I was surprised to see this band (サスライメイカー / Sasuraimeika [or Sasurai-Maker?]) playing live outside in the rain!  They were under the overhang from the Keio Department Store, so they weren't completely exposed, but the ground they were standing on was wet and it was windy....

Hiura Hisako (樋浦久子) Exhibit at Jungaro (純画廊)

This exhibit (2010/05/10-15) of pencil drawings by Hiura Hisako (樋浦久子) at Jungaro (純画廊) was enjoyable to experience.  In addition to the very fine pencil drawings (including the one on the promotional postcard shown here - which looks almost as though it could be a photograph), the frames were very interesting, with many different types utilized.  (The Jungaro gallery in general pays a lot of attention to frames, and this exhibit had the pictures well matched with the various types of frames used.)

This exhibit (2010/05/10-16) of photos by Ito Kazuma (伊藤和馬) at the recently opened Shashin Ginko Gallery (写真銀行) was interesting to look at for me, as several of the photographs are ones I would have been happy taking myself (philosophy, framing, etc.).  There is also an album of photos the photographer took on a trip to Mexico that were interesting to look through.

Fukushima Yoshihiko (福島禎彦展) Exhibit at Ginza Ono Gallery-2 (小野画廊2) - (2010/05)

This exhibit (2010/05/10-15) by Fukushima Yoshihiko (福島禎彦展) at Ginza Ono Gallery-2 (小野画廊2) was a lot of fun for me.  Way back in the 20th century, as a child, I had a small electric race track that I raced little cars on.  At some point, it vanished (I don't remember throwing it away - probably my parents did), and over the decades I had not even been close to another toy race track - until this exhibit, when the ceramics artist told me to go ahead and race his custom ceramic cars around the track a little.  So I did, and remembered the old saying "The difference between men and boys, is the price of their toys".  There were also white ceramic figures on one of the walls.

Hazama Naoko (羽間直子) Exhibit at Nabis Gallery (なびす画廊)

This exhibit (2010/05/10-15) by Hazama Naoko (羽間直子) at Nabis Gallery (なびす画廊) is meant to be seen as a whole, rather than for the component parts alone.  Personally, I found the exhibit most pleasing from the angle I took this video from.  When I contemplated the silver band the pictures were on, and commented to the artist that it provided a nice streaming effect - she told me that she got the idea while walking, and the exhibit is meant to be seen as a flow, with the viewer taking in the pictures while strolling along by the silver path....  (I had one jarring moment, when I came upon a mirror, looked in, and was shocked to see a strange man looking back at me.)

This exhibit (2010/05/08-15) by Ueno Yukiko (上野由紀子) at Gallery Tomo (ぎゃらりぃ朋) consisted of several different themes and styles.  The artist said that some visitors to the gallery commented that the pictures look like they were painted by different people.  (Personally, I see no reason why an artist has to stick to one style just to make it easy for people to identify that style as belonging to that one artist.)
