This exhibition (2012/02/17-25) by Kanemitsu Kimiko (金光紀美子) at Gallery Tomo (ぎゃらりぃ朋) consisted of pictures similar to the one featured on the promotional card. Interestingly, all of the pictures were painted onto boards instead of canvas, which gave the pictures a different texture.
This exhibition (2012/02/20-25) by Morigaki Yuriko (森垣友理子) at Gallery Kobo (巷房) consisted of paintings in the style of the picture on the promotional card - which the artist told me represent a cross between reality and dreams.
This abstract picture exhibition (2012/02/20-25) by Muromachi Katsuyo (室町克代) at Nabis Gallery (なびす画廊) consisted of paintings in the style of the picture shown here - which was my favorite at that show.
This exhibition (2012/02/20-25) by Taniho Reina (谷保玲奈) at Art Space Rashinban (アートスペース羅針盤) consisted of complicated warm-color oceanic pictures - two shown below - one larger than the artist herself (in the red dress).
This exhibition (2012/02/20-03/03) by Takao Mitsu (高尾みつ) at Gallery Okabe (ギャラリーオカベ) consisted of pictures in the style of the one featured on the promotional card. My favorites of the exhibition were couple of blue-themed pictures.
This exhibition by illustrator Nishimura Ikuo (西村郁雄) at Gallery Platform Studio (ギャラリープラットフォームスタジオ) consisted of a series of "catoons" (cat + cartoon) depicting various scenes, many humorous.
The Japanese title of the series of pictures was 吾輩はネコではない - ただ、ちょっと顔が似てるだけ, which could be translated as "I'm not a cat - I just look a little like one", or "I'm not a cat - I just have a face that looks line one", or "I'm not a cat, I just look that way". The joke is based on the opening lines of the Natsume Soseki novel "I am a Cat" - 吾輩は猫である which are widely known.
This month's (2012/02) Tokyo-Ten Group Exhibition (サロンど東京展) at Ginza-One (銀座ワーン) included several very nice pictures (for names, see promotional card below).
This exhibition (2012/02/19-26) by Fuji Kansuke (藤井勘圿) at Ehara Gallery (江原画廊) included the picture shown below from the promotional card, which had an interesting three-dimensional appearance in person that isn't apparent in the picture.
This exhibition (2012/02/19-26) by Matsuzaki Kazumi (松崎和実) at Shibata Etsuko Gallery (柴田悦子画廊) consisted of a fascinating combination of fish and dragons - as you can see from the promotional card below.
This installation (2012/02/13-18) by Shiiba Taishi (椎葉泰志) in the basement display space of Gallery Kobo (巷房) consisted of projected light shining against and through a moving transparent sheet. It was quite interesting to experience. There are two videos of this exhibition: [A][B].
This exhibition (2012/02/20-25) by Uchiyama Mutsumi (内山睦) at Gallery Hinoki (ギャラリー檜) consisted of pictures similar in style to the one featured on the promotional card.
The theme of the pictures was roof tiles - and some of the pictures were composed of small pieces of paper glued together like tiles on a roof. It was interesting, because the first sensation was, "That looks quite real - as though it were really three-dimensional..." quickly followed by "Wait... [looking from the side]... it *is* three dimensional!"
I was running shy on time when I visited this exhibition, so I only spent a few minutes looking at the pictures - noting that most of the paintings were more colorful than the picture on the promotional card - and absentmindedly listening to the artist talk with a friend. Looking around a little more, I noted that a picture with a purple background was my favorite of the exhibition, and then briefly gave the artist my card and exited.
My favorite was a green picture on the 3rd floor which I really liked - in the way a very green forest is beathtakingly beautiful after spending a lot of time on asphalt and concrtete and inbetween steel, concrete and glass buildings.
This exhibition (2012/01/30-02/04) by Aoki Toshie (青木千惠) at Gallery Musashi Ginza (銀座ギャラリームサシ) consisted of several large paintings, including the one (in part) featured on the promotional card. The effect of this set of paintings was quite remarkable - maybe it was the contrast with the gray winter streets outside, but it was an uplifting and energizing experience viewing these paintings. I stood in front of one and imaged hanging it on a wall in a nice (large, expensive, etc.) house....
This exhibition (2012/02/06-11) by Kondo Hideki (近藤英樹) in all three Gallery Kobo (巷房) spaces consisted of both prints and wooden carvings (both on the floor and some on the wall).
This installation (2012/01/30-02/04) by Nagaya Akiko (永冶晃子) at Ai Gallery (藍ギャラリー) consisted of two main elements - a projector showing scenes similar to that shown on the promotional card (rain and snow against a window) and a flat panel television on the wall showing clouds and fog. I rather liked the clear television monitor pictures of clouds and fog in the mountains.
This installation (2012/01/30-02/05) by Usuki Hideyuki (臼木英之) at Dou Gallery (ドゥ画廊) consisted of one-off directly painted designs on clothing. This artist also makes very intriguing paintings and installations.
This exhibition (2012/01/30-02/04) by Demise Hisao (出店久夫) at Gallery Kobo (巷房) consisted of composite and edited photographs (including interesting machine elements based on actual devices) - one example shown on the promotional card.
This exhibition (2012/01/30-02-04) by Nishide Mami (西出真美), Nishimatsu Shusuke (西松秀祐), and Sugiura Hikaru (杉浦光) at Nabis Gallery (なびす画廊) consisted of an interesting set of pictures and concepts, from photos, to simulated wave sounds with a radio, and paintings composed of (imperceptible at a distance) dots.
This exhibition (2012/01/30-02/04) by Yoshimura Kaneko (吉村周子) at Ginza Ono Gallery-2 (小野画廊-2) consisted of a range of paintings. One of the ones I liked best is the picture featured on the promotional card. This artist is also an art instructor, and was taking part in a group exhibition of her students' art at Art Gallery Ginza
This exhibition (2012/01/29-02/04) by Yasukawa Atsushi (安川醇) at Art Space Ginza One (アートスペース銀座ワン) consisted of sketches made at various places around Japan. The artist travels around Japan throughout the year (on and off - based out of Tokyo), and makes sketches at the various places he visits. (It's something I've long dreamed of doing with photography - maybe someday!) [2011 Exhibition]
This exhibition (2012/02/11-28) by Midorikawa Shunichi (緑川俊一) at Gallery Kazuki (画廊香月) consists of pictures similar to the ones visible in the picture below. In an early preview of the exhibit, the set of pictures - as a whole - struck me as a kind of new picture, with the individual pictures comprising components of the larger picture.
This exhibition (2012/01/20-28) by Akagi Micah (赤木美日) at Gallery Tomo (ぎゃらりぃ朋) consisted of a range of egg tempera pictures; from pictures of old narrow streets in Rome, to scenic pictures, and three pictures (including the one featured on the promotional card) which were painted directly onto wood. The pictures were quite nice, and also very detailed - a pleasure to view from both up close and at a distance. (The 2nd picture below is from a 2010 exhibition.)
This exhibition (2012/01/16-21) by jyari (ジャリ個展) at Keshiki Gallery B.Tokyo (ギャラリービートウキョウ) consisted of artwork similar to the picture on the promotional card - which are a combination of photographs and computer art.
This nihonga exhibition (2012/01/20-28) by Naono Keiko (直野恵子) at Shibata Etsuko Gallery (柴田悦子画廊) consisted of understated pictures similar in feeling (if not exactly in style) to the one featured on the promotional card.
This exhibition (2012/01/25-31) by Noda Emiko (野田えみこ) at Gallery-403 (ギャラリー403) consisted of a large number of postcards from the early 20th century. Considering that the cards are about 100 years old, it's amazing how nice the printing looks. (The same collector held a similar exhibition in 2011.)
