Nishimura Ikuo (西村郁雄) Exhibition at Gallery Platform Studio (ギャラリープラットフォームスタジオ) - (2012/02))

This exhibition by illustrator Nishimura Ikuo (西村郁雄) at Gallery Platform Studio (ギャラリープラットフォームスタジオ) consisted of a series of "catoons" (cat + cartoon) depicting various scenes, many humorous.  この展示会は、DM絵葉書見たいな色々な面白い絵でした。

The Japanese title of the series of pictures was 吾輩はネコではない - ただ、ちょっと顔が似てるだけ, which could be translated as "I'm not a cat - I just look a little like one", or "I'm not a cat - I just have a face that looks line one", or "I'm not a cat, I just look that way".  The joke is based on the opening lines of the Natsume Soseki novel "I am a Cat" - 吾輩は猫である which are widely known.

The theme of the pictures was roof tiles - and some of the pictures were composed of small pieces of paper glued together like tiles on a roof.  It was interesting, because the first sensation was, "That looks quite real - as though it were really three-dimensional..." quickly followed by "Wait... [looking from the side]... it *is* three dimensional!"

The pictures were apparent customized prints, with one drawing that was hand-drawn.  Rather liking the feeling of the picture and the expression of the woman in it, I asked the artist about it, and apparently she had drawn it a bit at a time over a couple of years.  I was hoping to show it here, but she was reluctant to have it photographed, so....

I was running shy on time when I visited this exhibition, so I only spent a few minutes looking at the pictures - noting that most of the paintings were more colorful than the picture on the promotional card - and absentmindedly listening to the artist talk with a friend.  Looking around a little more, I noted that a picture with a purple background was  my favorite of the exhibition, and then briefly gave the artist my card and exited.

I spoke with the artist briefly about his art - including the sculpture above.  It's composed of a few different pieces of wood, but the main left part and the main right part are from the same piece of wood - apparently one piece from further up the trunk than the other.

I visited this exhibition on its final day - not long before the artists needed to begin packing everything up.  (In fact, you can see and hear a part of that in a video I took later that day showing the floors of the building, at about 04:30: http://youtu.be/2qOPUnRNhRQ).  There was a wide range of art at the exhibition - including art utilizing a real spider's web.

My favorite was a green picture on the 3rd floor which I really liked - in the way a very green forest is beathtakingly beautiful after spending a lot of time on asphalt and concrtete and inbetween steel, concrete and glass buildings.

Aoki Toshie (青木千惠) Exhibition at Gallery Musashi Ginza (銀座ギャラリームサシ) - (2012/02)

This exhibition (2012/01/30-02/04) by Aoki Toshie (青木千惠) at Gallery Musashi Ginza (銀座ギャラリームサシ) consisted of several large paintings, including the one (in part) featured on the promotional card.  The effect of this set of paintings was quite remarkable - maybe it was the contrast with the gray winter streets outside, but it was an uplifting and energizing experience viewing these paintings.  I stood in front of one and imaged hanging it on a wall in a nice (large, expensive, etc.) house....

This installation (2012/01/30-02/04) by Nagaya Akiko (永冶晃子) at Ai Gallery (藍ギャラリー) consisted of two main elements - a projector showing scenes similar to that shown on the promotional card (rain and snow against a window) and a flat panel television on the wall showing clouds and fog.  I rather liked the clear television monitor pictures of clouds and fog in the mountains.

Yasukawa Atsushi (安川醇) Exhibition at Art Space Ginza One (アートスペース銀座ワン) - (2012/02)

This exhibition (2012/01/29-02/04) by Yasukawa Atsushi (安川醇) at Art Space Ginza One (アートスペース銀座ワン) consisted of sketches made at various places around Japan.  The artist travels around Japan throughout the year (on and off - based out of Tokyo), and makes sketches at the various places he visits.  (It's something I've long dreamed of doing with photography - maybe someday!)
