Yamada Shoichiro (山田正一郎) Exhibition at Ai Gallery (藍ギャラリー)

This exhibition (2011/05/23-28) by Yamada Shoichiro (山田正一郎) at Ai Gallery (藍ギャラリー) consisted of a set of large abstract paintings - one featured on the promotional card.  A note about this painting - it featured a clear panel in front of it which generated reflections - meaning that the picture would look differently depending on the room it is in.  The gallery has all white surfaces (wall, floor and ceiling) and I think the picture would probably look best in a more normal room with generally darker surfaces.  Some of the paintings had clear panels in front of them, and some were directly exposed.  In the very bight, all-white gallery, the uncovered paintings tended to look better, but the covering brings out the colors somewhat and would look very good in the right room.  この展示会は、絵葉書のような絵でした。 数枚の大きい絵で、透明カバーが付いている絵と普通カバーのない絵両方がありまして、明るい部屋で、カバーがない方がいいかも知りません。 もうちょっと暗い部屋だと、絵葉書にあるカバー付き絵が似合うと思う。

This exhibition (2011/05/14-23) by Doi Takanori (土居隆範) at Ai Gallery (藍ギャラリー) consisted of interesting images similar to the one featured on the promotional card.  In each case, a photo was visually framed by the backing it was mounted on, and the vertical stripes reminded me of looking out on a scene through open shoji doors.  この展示会は、絵葉書のような作品でした。  コンビは面白いと思って、なんだか、開いている障子から風景を見ている感じでした。

Sawamura Sumiko (沢村澄子) Exhibition at Gallery Platform Studio (ギャラリープラットフォームスタジオ)

This exhibition (2011/05/15-21) by Sawamura Sumiko (沢村澄子) at Gallery Platform Studio (ギャラリープラットフォームスタジオ) consisted of calligraphy - as shown in the three photographs below.  I spoke with the artist for a while about her art; it turns out she's from northern Japan, and her area of the country is experiencing extreme difficulties in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami.  Business has basically come to a halt - and for people working with art, this means cancelled exhibitions, and thus loss of sales of art supplies and services, etc.  この展示会は、以下の写真のような習字でした。 画家が、北日本からの人なので、地震と津波の後は、本当に大変らしい...。

Lacquerware Group Exhibition at Gallery Musashi Ginza (銀座ギャラリームサシ)

This group exhibition (2011/05/02-07) of Kamakura lacquerware at Gallery Musashi Ginza (銀座ギャラリームサシ) consisted of many fine examples of lacquerware, with many pieces depicting scenes shows in old prints.  In addition to traditional lacquerware colors (reddish-brown - see promotional card), there were some new colors as well.  I liked one example of green very much, but mainly preferred the traditional colors.

有賀次雄, 武田衛, and 池谷明治 Group Installation at Gallery Kobo (巷房)

At this group installation (2011/05/02-07) by Aruga Tsugio (有賀次雄), Takeda Mamoru (武田衛), and Iketani Akiharu (池谷明治) at Gallery Kobo (巷房), there were rows of standing pieces of paper (see second photo below) that were fun to watch while walking by - as is shown (somewhat) in this [video clip].  このインストレーションは、楽しかった。 並んでいる紙の隣に歩きながら見ると、面白かった[動画]。
